Dr. Carey Pope obtained a B.S. (1976) and M.S. (1979) degree in Biology from Stephen F. Austin State University, and then the Ph.D. degree in Pharmacology and Toxicology from the University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in Houston (1985). Carey was a National Research Council postdoctoral associate at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Health Effects Research Laboratory in Research Triangle Park (1986-1989), before beginning an academic career at the University of Louisiana at Monroe in 1989. He joined the faculty of OSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 2000 as Professor and the first Sitlington Chair in Toxicology.

His research interests are primarily in the neurotoxic effects of organophosphorus compounds, and how exogenous and endogenous factors may modulate those effects. The Neurotoxicology laboratory at OSU has been funded by multiple external agencies including the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), the Department of Defense (DoD), the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and others. Carey has been a member of the Neurotoxicology and Alcohol study section of NIEHS, president of the International Neurotoxicology Association, president of the Neurotoxicology Section of the Society of Toxicology, a member of the Scientific Advisory Panel for the EPA, and has served in additional advisory roles with the National Academy of Sciences, DoD, EPA and other agencies. Carey is currently on the editorial board of ten scientific journals and is associate editor for Journal of Pharmacology and Therapeutics.
