G. Michael Grammer

Dr. G. Michael Grammer is Professor and Chesapeake Energy Chair of Petroleum Geology. He is a sedimentary geologist whose research is focused on understanding the three dimensional formation, distribution and evolution of marine systems and how they are influenced by paleoceanography, paleoclimate and sea level change. He has a Bachelor’s degree in geology from the University of South Florida, a M.S. in geology from Southern Methodist University and a Ph.D. in Marine Geology and Geophysics from the University of Miami’s Marine Institute (RSMAS). In addition to faculty positions at the University of Miami/RSMAS, Western Michigan University, and OSU, Dr. Grammer spent 10 years in the energy industry. During his academic career he has been awarded research funds in excess of $4.7 million dollars as Principal Investigator, and another $22.0 million as co-Principal Investigator. These grants have been both federal (NSF, DOE/NETL, NOAA/NURP) and from industry sources. After joining OSU in 2012, Dr. Grammer directed a multinational industrial consortium focused on the “Characterization of Mississippian-aged Reservoirs in Oklahoma”.
Dr. Grammer has taught short courses for industry, academia, and professional societies on 5 continents. He was an Associate Editor for the Journal of Sedimentary Research for 14 years and routinely reviews papers for the leading journals in his field, as well as research proposals for several funding agencies. He has been Technical Program Chair, Session Convenor, and Keynote Presenter at numerous national and international professional meetings. To date, Dr. Grammer has 78 peer reviewed publications, including 3 special publications, and over 200 published abstracts for national and international professional meetings, many of which include his students as a co-author. He was selected as an AAPG Distinguished Lecturer and gave 23 lectures across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, and has also reported results of geologic analyses performed in Siberia to the Russian State Duma in Moscow.
Dr. Grammer has been awarded over 20 national and international awards for presentations, publications and research. International awards include the AAPG Grover E. Murray Memorial Distinguished Educator Award (2019), and the AAPG R.H. Dott Sr. Memorial Award for Best Special Publication in 2006. Other awards include the WMU Emerging Scholar award, the WMU Faculty Service Award, Texaco Outstanding Instructor Award, Texaco Outstanding Contributor Award, Texaco General Manager’s Outstanding Contributor Award and the Texaco Star Ambassador Award. In 2020 he was named as a Distinguished Geology Alumni by the University of South Florida.
