Perry Gethner is a historian of early modern French literature. He has published critical editions and translations of French plays from the 17th and 18th centuries, by such authors as Montchrestien, Rotrou, Du Ryer, Mairet and Voltaire. He has edited or co-edited collections of works by early French women playwrights. He has also published numerous articles dealing with various aspects of French drama, including baroque opera and musical comedy, staging and acting conventions, and controversies about literary and drama theory.
