Regents Professor of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics

2017

Tyrrell Conway, Ph.D., is Regents Professor of Microbiology with research interests in microbial physiology, metabolism, genomics, and pathogenesis. He is an Oklahoma native and an OSU alum. He returned to OSU to serve as Head of the Department of Microbiology. Conway is recognized for scientific discoveries that include U.S. Patent number 5,000,000 for genetically engineering E. coli to make biofuels. He published the first functional genomics analysis of E. coli and systematically determined what carbon sources E. coli uses to colonize the animal intestine. His NIH funded research team is characterizing the mechanisms used by pathogenic E. coli to acquire the nutrients it needs to outcompete the native intestinal microbiota.
