Prof. Gary G. Yen was born on 8 July 1963 in Taiwan. He received his Ph.D. degree in 1992 from the University of Notre Dame. Before joined OSU in 1997, he was with the Structure Control Division, U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory in Albuquerque. His research, supported by the DoD, DoE, EPA, NASA, NSF, and Process Industry, includes intelligent control, evolutionary multi-objective optimization, conditional health monitoring, signal processing and their industrial/defense applications.
Dr. Yen was an associate editor of theIEEE Control Systems Magazine,IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology,Automatica,Mechantronics,IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man and Cybernetics, Parts A and BandIEEE Transactions on Neural Networks. He is currently serving as an associate editor for theIEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation,IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics, andInternational Journal of Swarm Intelligence Research. He served as the General Chair for the2003 IEEE International Symposium on Intelligent Controlheld in Houston, TX and2006 IEEE World Congress on Computational Intelligenceheld in Vancouver, Canada. Dr. Yen served as Vice President for the Technical Activities in 2005-2006 and then President in 2010-2011 of the IEEE Computational intelligence Society. He was the founding editor-in-chief of theIEEE Computational Intelligence Magazine, 2006-2009. He chair the Awards Committee and Strategic Planning Committee for the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society during 2012-2015.
Dr. Yen received the Outstanding Young Faculty Award in 2000 and Outstanding Faculty Award in 2004, both from Halliburton Foundation. In 2009, he received the Regents Distinguished Research Award. In 2011, he received Andrew P Sage Best Transactions Paper Award fromIEEE Systems, Man and Cybernetics Society. In 2014, he received Meritorious Service Award fromIEEE Computational Intelligence Societyand Lockheed Martin Aeronautic Education Teaching Award. He was an elected distinguished lecturer under IEEE Computational Intelligence Society. He has delivered more than 100 invited talks as a Plenary/Keynote/Invited speakers at International Conferences/Workshops. He has been recognized oversea as an a Honorary Professor from Northeastern University in Shenyang, China, Dalian University of Science and Technology in Dalian, China, Sichuan University in Chengdu, China, Wuhan University in Wuhan, China, Central South University in Changsha, China, National Taipei University of Technology in Taipei, Taiwan, and University of Philippines in Manila, Philippines.
He is an elected Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Inc. (IET).
