RPT Review Task Force
During discussions in Spring 2011 with the OSU Faculty Council, Graduate Council, and Council of Deans, it was suggested that a university-wide task force be created to review policies and practices related to OSU’s reappointment, promotion and tenure (RPT) process. The focus of the study would be to review best practices nationally for considering reappointment, promotion, and tenure, and then to recommend to the university community, in general, and the Faculty Council, in particular, what best practices for OSU would be.
More specifically, it is intended that the task force will review RPT practices within each of our colleges, at peer institutions, including “aspirational peer institutions,” and take into account OSU’s particular needs and goals in making recommendations. It is expected the task force will conduct much of its work during the 2011-12 academic year, with the hope that some or all of their recommendations are ready for campus discussion during the 2012-2013 academic year and implementation during the 2013-14 academic year.
The task force will be charged with recommending procedures that (a) ensure the highest possible level of academic excellence, (b) are fair to all involved in the RPT process, and (c) take into account the varying needs of the different academic units at OSU. The task force is not intended to examine the “level” of the standards, but rather, how to set standards and implement them in an equitable way. It is possible that the task force will recommend major changes, minor changes, or no changes at all to existing policies.
