Procedure for Dropping and Withdrawing morrillcolumndropadd

Definitions

Dropping a Course(s) may occur during the first twelve weeks of the semester. This means, however, that you are still enrolled in at least one other OSU course. (Remedial courses cannot be dropped without written permission of the advisor.)

Withdrawing from the University means that you are dropping all of your courses and are no longer enrolled for the current semester. You cannot withdraw from the University if you have already completed a short course during the current semester.

Dropping via SIS Web for Students

You can drop a course on SIS Web for Students only before the end of the sixth class day that classes meet in a regular semester (not counting Saturday as a class day) or the third day of an eight-week session (or proportionate periods for block or short courses), a student may drop a course, and no record of the course will appear on the student's academic record. After that date a completed Drop/Add card must be taken to Office of the Registrar (322 Student Union) or Enrollment Services in Tulsa in order for the course to be removed from your schedule.

Dropping with an automatic "W" Procedure

  1. You must obtain your academic adviser's approval before you can drop a course.
  2. Deliver the completed Drop/Add Card to Office of the Registrar (322 Student Union) or Enrollment Services in Tulsa in order for the course to be removed from your schedule. Failure to complete this step will result in an "F" on your transcript.
  3. Print and double check your schedule after any change you make to ensure it has been done correctly.

Withdrawing from the University  (with assigned grade of "W" or "F")

Forms and information are available in the Office of the Registrar (322 Student Union) or OSU-Tulsa Advisement Center. If you completed a short course earlier in the semester you are not eligible to withdraw from the university; you must complete a Drop/Add card.

The maximum time period for requesting to drop a course after the deadline is no later than six months after the date the grade for the course is officially due in the Registrar’s Office.

Retroactive Drop/withdrawal Procedure

Deadline. The maximum time period for submitting a petition to drop a course after the deadline is no later than six months after the date the grade for the course is officially due in the Registrar's Office.

A course may be dropped by petition but only when verifiable extenuating circumstances can be demonstrated. Verifiable extenuating circumstances must be reasons beyond your control, such as serious illness or accidental injury. Poor performance in class is not an extenuating circumstance.

  1. Obtain a petition to drop a course after the deadline from your advisor.
  2. Fill out the drop petition and attach a written statement to your petition explaining your extenuating circumstance and include any evidence that would prove your claim.
  3. Get the signature of your advisor and director of student services.
  4. Submit the completed petition form to Academic Affairs (101 Whitehurst).
  5. The Late Drop Committee meets every Wednesday after the drop date through the week after final exams each semester or summer session. The committee will review your petition and approve or deny your request.
  6. If your petition is approved for an incident that occured prior to the deadline it will be sent automatically to the Registrar for grade assignment.  If the approved petition incident occured after the deadline the approved petition will be sent to your instructor for grade assignment. Please note, your instructor may assign a grade of "W" or "F".
Retroactive Withdrawal
  1. You must complete a withdrawal form and attach a written statement to your petition explaining your extenuating circumstance and include any documentation that will verify your claim.
  2. The withdrawal form requires the instructor's signature with an assigned grade of "W" or "F".
  3. Submit the completed forms and supporting documentation to the Office of Academic Affairs in 101 Whitehurst or OSU-Tulsa Advisement Center.
  4. The committee will review the petition and approve or deny the request.
  5. If the petition is approved the Registrar's office will process the request.

The maximum time period for requesting to retroactively drop a course is no later than six months after the date the grade for the course is officially due in the Registrar’s Office

Retroactive Drop Committee
The retroactive drop committee is composed of a representative from each college and the Registrar's office. They meet every Wednesday after the drop date through the week after final exams each semester or summer session to review petitions. Petitions submitted after this date will be reviewed in the next term. The committee will determine by majority vote whether the student’s circumstances merit the granting of an exception to the deadline for dropping courses. The key questions in determining whether to approve the drop after the deadline are (1) did the circumstances described change or arise after the deadline, and (2) why do the circumstances described affect only the course requested to be dropped.

The Decision of the committee is final. Members of the committee have full authority to act on the petitions as representatives of faculty and administration. No appeal exists for the decision of the committee.
